Correspondence and Subject Files 1941-1988; 1967-1986.

This series comprises records pertaining to The American Lutheran Church's (TALC) involvement in mission work in the geographical region it designated "Spanish-speaking Latin America." The records were retained by the office of the Secretary for Latin America and the Middle East in the Division for World Mission and Inter-Church Cooperation (DWMIC). They date from 1941-1988 with the bulk of records created from 1967-1986. Though the records were retained by the Secretary for Latin America and the Middle East, some of the records, related to Mexico, were generated by the Division of American Missions, which had responsibility until 1973 for mission work in Mexico, and the DWMIC's Executive Director, who in the late 1960s and early 1970s had responsibilities related to the Centros de Estudios Teologicos Augsburgo (CETA), a Lutheran seminary in Mexico serving the Latin America area. Typewritten and handwritten business correspondence comprises the majority of records. While there are additional record types for material pertaining to Mexico, such as legal documents and financial statements, the bulk of non correspondence records can be characterized as printed topical and informational reports, congregation statistical reports, promotional and educational material, newsletters, press releases, newspaper articles, newspaper editorials, and commentaries. There are three countries represented in this series: Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama. Records relating to Mexico include mostly correspondence relating to the financial assistance TALC gave the Iglesia Luterana Mexicana (ILM) and assistance provided to CETA, later Seminario Luterano Augsburgo, the Augsburg Lutheran Seminary. In addition to news-related material pertaining to work in Nicaragua, there is also material pertaining to the political situation in Nicaragua in the mid-1980s. There are no records for Colombia in this series. TALC 14/10/3/2 Evangelical Lutheran Church-Colombia Synod (ELCCS), 1968-1974 only has records through 1974. It is possible that records for Colombia are interfiled with ELCA Division for Global Missions records or with records for other predecessor church bodies and could not be easily separated. Oversized architectural drawings and map were placed in a folder marked "TALC 16/6/3/1" and placed in the mapcase area. Records are arranged alphabetically by subject.
